ABSTRACT

Public support for responses to the coronavirus pandemic has sharply diverged on partisan lines in many countries, with conservatives tending to oppose lockdowns, social distancing, mask mandates and vaccines, and liberals far more supportive. This polarization may arise from the way in which the attitudes of each side is echoed back to them, especially on social media. In this paper, I argue that echo chambers are not to blame for this polarization, even if they are causally responsible for it. They are not to blame, because belief calibration in an echo chamber is a rational process;moreover, the epistemically constitutive properties of echo chambers are not optional for epistemically social animals like us. There is no special problem of echo chambers;rather, there is a problem of misleading evidence (especially higher-order evidence). Accordingly, we ought to respond to misinformation about COVID neither by attempting to dismantle echo chambers nor by attempting to make people more rational, but rather by attempting to supplant unreliable higher-order evidence with better evidence.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has been going on for more than two years. Vaccination is believed to be one of the most efficient ways to achieve herd immunity and end pandemic. However, the contents about COVID-19 vaccines on social media have impacts on personal attitude towards vaccination. The present study aims to examine the current scenario and the echo chamber effect of COVID-19 vaccine videos on YouTube. A total of 1,646 videos with comments and replies were identified. An approach combining topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and social network analysis was employed to explore users' attitude towards COVID-19 vaccines and whether the echo chamber effect existed. The results indicate that, even if the misleading and anti-vaccination videos were removed by the platform, "anti-vaccination"contents still widely appear in the comments. Moreover, the community of "anti-vaccination"users was more homogeneous compared with that of "pro-vaccination"users. The findings of this study advanced theories of echo chamber effect and the network perspective to examine echo chambers. We propose that should be paid more attention ideology echo chamber, compared with exposure echo chamber. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

During COVID-19, fake news on social media seriously threatened public health. As a solution to this problem, this study examined how social media exposure patterns affect people being deeply harmed by fake news. Based on cognitive dissonance theory, this study investigated the effect of intentional and incidental exposure on belief in fake news through the mediating role of confirmation bias. The results show that intentional exposure positively influences confirmation bias and belief in fake news. Incidental exposure is the opposite. Our results also show that intentional exposure and confirmation bias negatively influence incidental exposure. Furthermore, these relationships remain unchanged by gender. This study provides theoretical and empirical contributions to reducing people's belief in fake news.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to global disruptions in emergency medicine (EM) teaching and training and highlighted the need to strengthen virtual learning platforms. This disruption coincides with essential efforts to scale up training of the emergency healthcare workforce, particularly in low-resource settings where the specialty is not well developed. Thus, there is growing interest in strengthening virtual platforms that can be used to support emergency medicine educational initiatives globally. These platforms must be robust, context specific and sustainable in low-resource environments. This report describes the implementation of Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), a telementoring platform originally designed to extend specialist support to health care workers in rural and underserved areas in New Mexico. This platform has now been implemented successfully across the globe. We describe the challenges and benefits of the Project ECHO model to support a Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training program for health care providers in Kenya who do not have specialty training in emergency medicine. Our experience using this platform suggests it is amenable to capacity building for non-specialist emergency care providers in low-resource settings, but key challenges to implementation exist. These include unreliable and costly internet access and lack of institutional buy-in.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: This article elicits our experiences and strategic approaches to ensure the sustainability of the online capacity-building programmes for healthcare providers (HCPs) in comprehensive cancer screening through the 'Hub and Spoke' model during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: During the first wave of COVID-19, training for three cohorts of medical officers (MO) (Batch-A) was ongoing (May-December 2020). The Indian health system abruptly shifted focus towards containing the COVID-19 spread, leading to new challenges in conducting training courses. A new five-step strategic approach for cohort MO-14 (Batch-B) was adopted to spread awareness about the importance of cancer screening and the roles and responsibilities of HCPs in the implementation and conduct of practical sessions in their states in collaboration with their respective state governments. We also adopted social media - WhatsApp for official communication. Results: Enrolling Batch-B following the new strategic approach reduced refusals by 25% and dropouts by 36% compared to Batch-A. Course compliance and completion was a significant 96% in Batch-B. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic opened a window of opportunity to understand the need for vital changes to improve the quality of our hybrid cancer screening training. Inclusion of the state government in planning and implementing the changes, awareness among HCPs about the importance of training and responsible acceptance of cancer screening, district-wise approach, use of social media in sharing course materials and conducting in-person training in the respective state have demonstrated significant impact on the quality of the training and in scaling-up of cancer screening. Prolonged mentorship, robust Internet connectivity for providers and training on handling gadgets and online video communication would profoundly benefit remote training programmes.A well-devised backup system is essential for training programmes during unforeseen eventualities such as the COVID pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Background: Practitioners report a lack of knowledge and confidence in treating autistic children, resulting in unmet healthcare needs. The Extension of Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) Autism model addresses this through discussion of participant-generated cases, helping physicians provide best-practice care through co-created recommendations. Recommendations stemming from ECHO cases have yet to be characterized and may help guide the future care of autistic children. Our objective was to characterize and categorize case discussion recommendations from Project ECHO Ontario Autism to better identify gaps in clinician knowledge. Methods: We conducted a summative content analysis of all ECHO Ontario Autism case recommendations to identify categories of recommendations and their frequencies. Two researchers independently coded recommendations from five ECHO cases to develop the coding guide. They then each independently coded all remaining cases and recommendations from three cycles of ECHO held between October 2018 to July 2021, meeting regularly with the ECHO lead to consolidate the codes. A recommendation could be identified with more than one code if it pertained to multiple aspects of autism care. Categories from the various codes were identified and the frequency of each code was calculated. Results: Of the 422 recommendations stemming from 62 cases, we identified 55 codes across ten broad categories. Categories included accessing community resources (n = 224), referrals to allied health and other providers (n = 202), ongoing autism care (n = 169), co-occurring mental and physical health conditions (n = 168), resources and tools for further learning (n = 153), physician to provide education and coaching to families (n = 150), promoting parent and family wellness (n = 104), supporting community autism diagnosis (n = 97), promoting patient empowerment and autonomy (n = 87), and COVID-19 (n = 26). Conclusion: This is the first time that recommendations from ECHO Autism have been characterized and grouped into categories. Our results show that advice for autism identification and management spans many different facets of community-based care. Specific attention should be paid to providing continued access to education about autism, streamlining referrals to allied health providers, and a greater focus on patient- and family-centered care. Physicians should have continued access to autism education to help fill knowledge gaps and to facilitate families' service navigation.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study presents a graph-based, macro-scale, polarity-based, echo chamber detection approach for Twitter. Echo chambers are a concern as they can spread misinformation, and reinforce harmful stereotypes and biases in social networks. Methods: This study recorded the German-language Twitter stream over two months, recording about 6.7M accounts and their 75.5M interactions (33M retweets). This study focuses on retweet interaction patterns in the German-speaking Twitter stream and found that the greedy modularity maximization and HITS metric are the most effective methods for identifying echo chambers. Results: The purely structural detection approach identified an echo chamber (red community, 66K accounts) focused on a few topics with a triad of anti-Covid, right-wing populism and pro-Russian positions (very likely reinforced by Kremlin-orchestrated troll accounts). In contrast, a blue community (113K accounts) was much more heterogeneous and showed "normal” communication interaction patterns. Conclusions: The study highlights the effects of echo chambers as they can make political discourse dysfunctional and foster polarization in open societies. The presented results contribute to identifying problematic interaction patterns in social networks often involved in the spread of disinformation by problematic actors. It is important to note that not the content but only the interaction patterns would be used as a decision criterion, thus avoiding problematic content censorship. © 2023 by the author.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we address how YouTube videos promote misinformation about hydroxychloroquine in Brazil. We follow two research questions. RQ1: How is pro-hydroxychloroquine content propagated on YouTube? RQ2: How does YouTube's recommendation system suggest videos about hydroxychloroquine on the platform? We use mixed methods (content analysis and social network analysis) to analyze 751 YouTube videos. We found that most pro-HCQ videos in our dataset are posted by mainstream media channels (RQ1) and that YouTube was more likely to recommend pro-HCQ videos than anti-HCQ videos (RQ2). Consequently, the Brazilian mainstream media and YouTube's algorithms fueled the spread of pro-HCQ content. © 2022 Associacao Brasileira de Pesquisadores de Jornalismo. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO)-based telementoring was evaluated for disseminating early disaster interventions, Psychological First Aid (PFA) and Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR), to school professionals throughout rural, disaster-affected communities further affected by COVID-19. PFA and SPR complemented their Multitiered System of Support: PFA complemented tier 1 (universal) and SPR tier 2 (targeted) prevention. We evaluated the outcomes of a pretraining webinar (164 participants, January 2021) and four-part PFA training (84 participants, June 2021) and SPR training (59 participants, July 2021) across five levels of Moore's continuing medical education evaluation framework: (1) participation, (2) satisfaction, (3) learning, (4) competence, and (5) performance, using pre-, post-, and 1-month follow-up surveys. Positive training outcomes were observed across all five levels, with high participation and satisfaction throughout, and high use at the 1-month follow-up. ECHO-based telementoring may successfully engage and train community providers in these underused early disaster response models. Recommendations regarding training format and using evaluation to improve training are provided.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The toll of COVID-19 stress on the mental health of the workforce has been well-documented. The present study examined the use of the Project ECHO framework to provide practices and resources on stress management and emotion regulation to increase individual and organizational health and well-being. METHODS: Three independent ECHOs were designed and conducted over an 18-month period. Data was collected on the implementation of new learning and comparisons of organizational efforts toward being more secondary trauma responsive from baseline to post initiative, using cloud-based survey methods. RESULTS: Findings suggest that the use of micro-interventions at the organizational level improved over time in the areas of resilience-building and policy-making, and that individuals were actively integrating skills related to managing their stress. CONCLUSIONS: Lessons learned adapting and implementing ECHO strategies in the midst of a pandemic are offered, as well as how to cultivate wellness champions in the workforce.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In the quest to ensure that quality healthcare is provided to all citizens through building healthcare worker capacity and extending reach for expert services, Zambia's Ministry of Health (MoH) in collaboration with its partners PEPFAR through the CDC and HRSA, began to implement the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) tele-mentoring program across the country through the Health Workers for the 21st Century (HW21) Project and University Teaching Hospital HIV/AIDS Project (UTH-HAP). This ECHO tele-mentoring approach was deemed pivotal in helping to improve the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) service delivery capacity of health care workers. METHOD: The study used a mixed method, retrospective program evaluation to examine ECHO participants' performance in the management of HIV/AIDS patients in all the 10 provinces of Zambia. CASE PRESENTATION: A phenomenological design was applied in order to elicit common experiences of ECHO users through focus group discussions using semi-structured facilitation guides in four provinces (Eastern, Lusaka, Southern and Western) implementing ECHO tele-mentoring approach. These provinces were purposively selected for this study. From which, only participants that had a monthly frequency of ECHO attendance of ten (10) and above were selected. The participants were purposively selected based on the type of cadre as well as facility type so that the final sample consisted of Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Clinical Officers, Medical Licentiates, Pharmacy and Laboratory Personnel. All sessions were audio recorded and transcribed by the data collectors. A thematic content analysis approach was adopted for analyzing content of the interview's transcripts. RESULTS: Enhanced knowledge and skills of participants on HIV/TB improved by 46/70 (65.7%) in all provinces, while 47/70 (67.1%) of the participants reported that ECHO improved their clinical practice. Further, 12/70 (17.1%) of participants in all provinces reported that presenter/presentation characteristics facilitated ECHO implementation and participation. While, 15/70(21.4%) of the participants reported that ownership of the program had contributed to ECHO implementation and participation. Coordination, another enabler accounted for 14/70 (20%). Inclusiveness was reported as a barrier by 16/70 (22.8%) of the participants while 6/70 (8.6%) of them reported attitudes as a barrier (8.6%) to ECHO participation. In addition, 34/70 (48.6%) reported poor connectivity as a barrier to ECHO implementation and participation while 8/70 (11.5%) of the participants reported that the lack of ownership of the ECHO program was a barrier. 22/70 (31.4%) reported that increased workload was also a barrier to the program's implementation. CONCLUSION: Consistent with its logical pathway model, healthcare providers' participation in ECHO sessions and onsite mentorship contributed to improved knowledge on HIV/TB among health care providers and patient health outcomes. In addition, barriers to ECHO implementation were intrinsic to the program its self, such as coordination, presenter and presentation characteristics other barriers were extrinsic to the program such as poor connectivity, poor infrastructure in health facilities and negative attitudes towards ECHO. Improving on intrinsic factors and mitigating extrinsic factors may help improve ECHO outcomes and scale-up plans.

ABSTRACT

Children with COVID-19 usually show milder symptoms than adults; however, a minority of them may have cardiac involvement. We aimed to identify the role of troponin I levels that may predict early cardiac involvement in children with COVID-19. A single-center retrospective study was conducted to evaluate hospitalized children diagnosed with COVID-19 between March 11, 2020, and December 31, 2021. Patients with available troponin I levels and with no known cardiac disease were included. During the study period, 412 children with COVID-19 who had troponin I levels on admission were identified. Troponin levels were elevated in 7 (1.7%) patients and were normal in 395 (98.3%) patients. The median age of patients with elevated troponin levels was 4 (min. 2-max. 144) months, which was statistically lower than the age of patients with normal troponin levels (P = 0.035). All the patients with elevated troponin levels had tachycardia. Out of 7 patients with high troponin levels, 3 (42.9%) of them were admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), 2 (28.6%) required oxygen support, and 1 (14.3%) required a mechanical ventilator. Patients with elevated troponin levels had a statistically longer hospital stay (P < 0.001). Neutropenia, tachycardia, PICU admission, oxygen support, and mechanical ventilation were statistically more common in patients with elevated troponin levels (P values were 0.033, 0.020, < 0.001, 0.050, and < 0.001, respectively). Electrocardiography (ECG) and echocardiography (ECHO) were performed on all patients with elevated troponin levels, and 6 (85.8%) patients were diagnosed with myocarditis. The ECG and ECHO have been performed in 58 (14.3%) out of 405 patients with normal troponin levels. Two (3.5%) patients had negative T waves on ECG, and all ECHOs were normal. Our results suggest that elevated troponin I levels in children with COVID-19 can be used to evaluate cardiac involvement and decide the need for further pediatric cardiologist evaluation.

Background: Innovative approaches to deliver timely information to rural healthcare providers are necessary with the COVID-19 pandemic. Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) is a telementoring program designed to provide practitioners in rural communities with opportunities to engage in specialty training. We examined participant perceptions of a rapidly deployed, single continuing education session to improve healthcare provider preparedness for COVID-19 in Idaho. Methods: A modified Project ECHO session was developed to inform providers about emergency preparedness, treatment, testing, and resources for COVID-19. A post-session survey examined session impact and barriers on clinical practice. Results: Respondents believed the modified ECHO session increased COVID-19 knowledge and would improve their clinical practice and preparedness. Respondents were satisfied with the session and identified content, interdisciplinary collaboration, and format as beneficial; perceived barriers for utilizing session information included a lack of relevance of content and clinical applicability, and time constraints. Conclusions: A rapidly deployed modified Project ECHO session was perceived as an effective mechanism to foster collaboration and relay information to promote best practices at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. An established Project ECHO network may be useful to rapidly exchange knowledge and information during a health emergency.

ABSTRACT

Recent advances in computing and immersive technologies have provided Meta (formerly Facebook) with the opportunity to leapfrog or expedite its way of thinking and devising a global computing platform called the "Metaverse". This hypothetical 3D network of virtual spaces is increasingly shaping alternatives to the imaginaries of data-driven smart cities, as it represents ways of living in virtually inhabitable cities. At the heart of the Metaverse is a computational understanding of human users' cognition, emotion, motivation, and behavior that reduces the experience of everyday life to logic and calculative rules and procedures. This implies that human users become more knowable and manageable and their behavior more predictable and controllable, thereby serving as passive data points feeding the AI and analytics system that they have no interchange with or influence on. This paper examines the forms, practices, and ethics of the Metaverse as a virtual form of data-driven smart cities, paying particular attention to: privacy, surveillance capitalism, dataveillance, geosurveillance, human health and wellness, and collective and cognitive echo-chambers. Achieving this aim will provide the answer to the main research question driving this study: What ethical implications will the Metaverse have on the experience of everyday life in post-pandemic urban society? In terms of methodology, this paper deploys a thorough review of the current status of the Metaverse, urban informatics, urban science, and data-driven smart cities literature, as well as trends, research, and developments. We argue that the Metaverse will do more harm than good to human users due to the massive misuse of the hyper-connectivity, datafication, algorithmization, and platformization underlying the associated global architecture of computer mediation. It follows that the Metaverse needs to be re-cast in ways that re-orientate in how users are conceived; recognize their human characteristics; and take into account the moral values and principles designed to realize the benefits of socially disruptive technologies while mitigating their pernicious effects. This paper contributes to the academic debates in the emerging field of data-driven smart urbanism by highlighting the ethical implications posed by the Metaverse as speculative fiction that illustrates the concerns raised by the pervasive and massive use of advanced technologies in data-driven smart cities. In doing so, it seeks to aid policy-makers in better understanding the pitfalls of the Metaverse and their repercussions upon the wellbeing of human users and the core values of urban society. It also stimulates prospective research and further critical perspectives on this timely topic.

OBJECTIVE: To examine how the COVID-19 Project ECHO program may have influenced the mental health of community health workers (CHWs) from South Texas. The program was designed around case-based learning and mentorship to provide support to CHWs and help them gain expertise to provide services to their communities. DESIGN: An explanatory sequential mixed methods pilot study. SAMPLE: Fifteen CHWs who were enrolled in the program participated in this study. MEASUREMENTS: The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) were used to measure the differences pre- and post-intervention. Qualitative description was used to explore the experiences of the participating CHWs. RESULTS: The PSS post-test mean (12.53) showed a statistically significant decrease from the pretest mean (17.01) (t (14 = 2.456, p = .028). The CHWs explained that the death of loved ones, feelings of isolation, and work-related concerns influenced their mental health. CHWs expressed that the program provided them with emotional support and resources for their clients. CONCLUSIONS: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on disadvantaged and medically underserved areas will be long-lasting; therefore, the need is greater than ever for CHWs to receive mental health support and be able to connect communities with vital resources.

Echo chambers have often been analyzed in social media studies as dysfunctions of communication fostering the polarization of debates and the spreading of conspiracy theories. On the other hand, from a linguistic perspective, very little research has been conducted on these themes. Our work aims to investigate the linguistic dimension of echo chambers, exploring them as ideological structures that are observable when ideological conflict occurs. Using word embedding and corpus-based discourse analysis, we investigate mediatic discourse on COVID-19 in the Coronavirus Corpus and in the Public Coronavirus Twitter Data Set. The analysis focuses on the semantic and pragmatic status of the word hoax, which emerges as a keyword characterizing the Twitter dataset. Our study shows how linguistic markers of ideological conflict can act as markers of position and affective/social identity. © 2022 John Benjamins Publishing Company.

ABSTRACT

Background: Fatigue and muscle weakness are common complaints in COVID-19 survivors. However, little is still known about the skeletal muscle qualitative and quantitative characteristics after hospitalization due to moderate and severe COVID-19. Objectives: To assess rectus femoris and vastus intermedius muscle thickness (MT) and rectus femoris echo intensity (EI) and to establish its association with demographic, clinical, functional, and inflammatory parameters in long COVID patients after hospital discharge. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 312 COVID-19 patients (53.53% male; age: 54.59 ± 13.50 years), with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. Patients were assessed 3-11 months after hospital discharge. We evaluated MT of the right rectus femoris and vastus intermedius and EI of the right rectus femoris using a portable ultrasound system, 6-13 MHz, broadband linear transducer. We corrected EI using the subcutaneous fat thickness. Ultrasonographic parameters were tested in association with demographic (sex and age); functional (Handgrip strength measurement, Timed Up and Go, 1 min Sit-to-Stand test, EuroQoL-5 Dimensions-5 Levels, World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0), Post-COVID-19 Functional Status, Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT), Medical Research Council (MRC) sum score, Borg Dyspnea Scale, MRC Dyspnea score, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, Functional Independence Measurement (FIM), and Functional Oral Intake Scale); clinical (length of hospital stay, intubation, and presence of comorbidities such as systemic hypertension, diabetes, obesity, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma), and inflammatory data assessed by the C-reactive protein and D-dimer serum concentrations. Results: Rectus femoris MT was associated with age, handgrip strength, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and subcutaneous fat thickness (r2 = 27.51%; p < 0.0001). Vastus intermedius MT was associated with age, pain intensity, handgrip strength, Epworth Sleepiness scale, FIM, and time since hospital discharge (r2 = 21.12%; p < 0.0001). Rectus femoris EI was significantly associated with the male sex, TUG, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and C-Reactive Protein levels (r2 = 44.39%; p < 0.0001). Mean MT of rectus femoris and vastus intermedius are significantly different (p < 0.001). Conclusion: After hospital discharge, long COVID patients present qualitative and quantitative skeletal muscle characteristics associated with a combination of demographic, clinical, and functional parameters.

ABSTRACT

To address the daunting behavioral and mental health needs of Kansas' rural and underserved communities, Telehealth ROCKS (Rural Outreach for the Children of Kansas) Schools project partnered with school-based health centers, school districts, and special education cooperatives to provide a range of telebehavioral health intervention services and teletraining. This project used the Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) telementoring framework to connect specialty providers with school/community providers for web-based continuing education and case consultation to support students with special education needs. Our team created the Function Friday for Better Behavior ECHO series to address challenging behaviors in schools, based on the concept of functional behavior assessment and function-based treatment. Part of the ECHO series came into being after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This article describes how our ECHO series provided an effective mechanism for supporting school and community providers during the pandemic, and participating educators utilized skills as they transitioned from onsite education to the virtual learning environment with students.

ABSTRACT

Patients recovered from COVID-19 may develop long-COVID symptoms in the lung. For this patient population (post-COVID patients), they may benefit from longitudinal, radiation-free lung MRI exams for monitoring lung lesion development and progression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of a spiral ultrashort echo time MRI sequence (Spiral-VIBE-UTE) in a cohort of post-COVID patients in comparison with CT and to compare image quality obtained using different spiral MRI acquisition protocols. Lung MRI was performed in 36 post-COVID patients with different acquisition protocols, including different spiral sampling reordering schemes (line in partition or partition in line) and different breath-hold positions (inspiration or expiration). Three experienced chest radiologists independently scored all the MR images for different pulmonary structures. Lung MR images from spiral acquisition protocol that received the highest image quality scores were also compared against corresponding CT images in 27 patients for evaluating diagnostic image quality and lesion identification. Spiral-VIBE-UTE MRI acquired with the line in partition reordering scheme in an inspiratory breath-holding position achieved the highest image quality scores (score range = 2.17-3.69) compared to others (score range = 1.7-3.29). Compared to corresponding chest CT images, three readers found that 81.5% (22 out of 27), 81.5% (22 out of 27) and 37% (10 out of 27) of the MR images were useful, respectively. Meanwhile, they all agreed that MRI could identify significant lesions in the lungs. The Spiral-VIBE-UTE sequence allows for fast imaging of the lung in a single breath hold. It could be a valuable tool for lung imaging without radiation and could provide great value for managing different lung diseases including assessment of post-COVID lesions.

ABSTRACT

Along with the development of high-speed communication networks, edge-enabled mobile devices have opened new possibilities for diagnosing health conditions or developing suitable treatment plans. While the latest deep learning technology has deployed to restructure and translate complex medical applications, the costly training operation using large-scale neural networks with tremendous amount of data remain the major challenge. In this work, we take advantages of reservoir computing to develop a reliable and low-cost medical diagnostic system for edge-enabled devices. Specifically, an echo state network (ESN) was trained to discover non-obvious correlation and likelihood from biomedical data with respect to various patients. Through the determination of cardiovascular and coronavirus diseases, numerical evaluations demonstrated advantage of ESN against the state-of-the-art. At particularly no computation overhead, ESN precisely described the prediction tasks of health conditions, offering improvements of up to 1000x in sample reduction, 175x in training speedup, and 15 percentage points in prediction accuracy. © 2022 IEEE.
